I have a friend who once said, to paraphrase, ‘If you make decisions to assimilate, or to do the opposite, you are still allowing someone else to decide.’ Like the RUSH lyric, “If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.” Individuality is determining what you want and need from your life, entirely devoid of any expectation other than your own, and ACTING on it. It’s a difficult place to reach, but once you’re there, you’re the freest a person gets in society. Love this piece!

That is a really great way of seeing it! Whether we like it or not, we all gotta move forwards!

I'm glad you like this one, too!

This reads like a psalm for the paranoid age. The repetition ('If you... If they...') builds a liturgy of distrust. The final line is beautiful and cruel. Anyone who believes they are free has just proven they are not.

Thank you!

Most of the poem is meant to build a dependency on structure while also challenging it, making the final line stand out.

I’m really glad you describe it as “beautiful and true!”

Wonderful piece. Reflective, and with some things to really take away and sit with,
